ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire (MIG & TIG)
ER5356 is an aluminum-magnesium welding filler metal containing 4.5–5.5% magnesium. Classified under AWS A5.10 and EN ISO 18273, it is commonly used for compatible 5xxx-series aluminum alloys and selected 6xxx-series applications. It is commonly selected for compatible 5052, 5083, and 5086 aluminum alloys, as well as selected 6xxx-series applications. Filler metal selection depends on the base alloy, service conditions, and applicable welding procedure.

ER5356 vs. ER4043 Aluminum Welding Wire
Selection Factor | ER5356 | ER4043 |
|---|---|---|
Main Alloying Element | Magnesium | Silicon |
Common Applications | Compatible 5xxx alloys and selected 6xxx alloys | Compatible 6xxx alloys and selected castings |
Weld-Metal Strength | Often higher in compatible applications | Generally lower than ER5356 |
Anodized Appearance | May provide a closer color match in some applications | May produce a gray color difference |
Main Consideration | Alloy compatibility and elevated-temperature service | High-magnesium alloys and application-specific requirements |
How to Reduce Porosity When Welding Aluminum
- Remove oil, grease, and oxide from the joint before welding.
- Use clean tools dedicated to aluminum.
- Keep filler wire and TIG rods clean and dry.
- Protect the welding area from wind and shielding-gas disruption.
- Follow suitable welding parameters and shielding-gas requirements.
