ER4043 is a 5% Silicon aluminum alloy filler metal that is one of the most widely used aluminum welding alloys for fabrication and general repairs.
Standard Diameter & Packaging
• MIG wires: 0.8/0.9/1.0/1.2/1.6 mm, Standard spools: 0.45kg, 0.5kg, 1kg, 2kg,5kg,6 kg, 7 kg
• TIG rods: 1.6/2.0/2.4/3.2/4.0/5.0 mm, 1m fixed length, packed in5kg plastic tube and 5kg cardboard box.
Applicable Welding Processes & Shielding Gases
• Melting range: 573℃~625℃, lower than Al-Mg welding wires,
• Weld pool: High fluidity and wettability, low spatter, smooth and clean weld bead,
• Welding process: Suitable for all-position welding. Compatible with MIG, TIG and oxy-acetylene welding,
• Shielding gas: Pure argon (Ar); argon-helium mixture for thick plates. Flow rate: 14~24 L/min.
Mechanical Properties
• Tensile strength: ≥185 MPa
• Yield strength: ≥45 MPa
• Elongation after fracture: ≥12%
Features: Medium strength and average ductility; lower toughness than ER5356 Al-Mg wire
Advantages
• Excellent resistance to hot cracking: The low-melting Al-Si eutectic fills grain boundaries during solidification, effectively preventing cracking on heat-treated 6xxx series aluminum like 6061/6063, making it the top filler for 6xxx alloys,
• Great weld pool fluidity, delivering clean, nice-looking beads for thin sheets, complex profiles and cast aluminum repair,
• Stable arc and smooth wire feeding, ideal for automatic and robotic welding,
• Better heat resistance than Al-Mg wires, stable for long-term service above 65℃,
• Wide compatibility for dissimilar welding between wrought and cast aluminum.
Disadvantages & Forbidden Applications
• Not for high-magnesium 5xxx alloys (5083, 5056, 5454 etc.). Silicon reacts with magnesium to form brittle Mg₂Si, drastically reducing joint strength, ductility and corrosion resistance,
• Obvious color difference after anodizing: Base metal turns silver while welds show dull grey marks. Unsuitable for decorative parts requiring uniform anodized appearance,
• Lower weld strength and seawater corrosion resistance compared to ER5356,
• Low elongation, not recommended for structures under repeated impact or fatigue loads.
Compatible Base Metals
Recommended Materials
• 6xxx heat-treatable aluminum: 6061, 6063, 6005A, 6082 (most widely used)
• 1xxx pure aluminum: 1050, 1060, 1070
• 3xxx Al-Mn alloy: 3003, 3A21
• Low-magnesium 5xxx: Only 5052 (low Mg content, low welding risk)
• Cast aluminum alloys: A356, ZL101, ZL104 & other Al-Si castings for repair
• Dissimilar joints: Weld between 1xxx/3xxx/6xxx, wrought + cast aluminum
Unsuitable Materials
High-magnesium 5xxx alloys (5083, 5086, 5056, 5454). Not for pressure vessels or marine structures exposed to seawater.
