How to Install the Welding Wire for Gasless Welding

Tired of wire jams and messy gasless setup? This quick step-by-step gets your flux-core welder ready in 2 minutes, perfect for beginners and shop fabricators.

1,Prep the machine

Power off your welder, open the spool compartment, and remove the gas nozzle/diffuser — they’re unnecessary for self-shielded flux-core wire.

2,Mount flux-core spool

Slide the wire reel onto the holder, secure with the nut (not too tight!). Make sure wire unwinds downward to avoid tangles.

3,Thread the wire correctly

Trim the wire tip smooth, feed it through the inlet guide, then between knurled drive rolls (critical for soft flux-core wire). Close the tension arm and adjust tension until wire feeds smoothly without flattening.

4,Feed wire through the torch

Turn the welder on, squeeze the torch trigger to push wire all the way out the contact tip. Trim wire to ½ inch stickout.

5,Fix polarity (the most common mistake!)

Swap cables to DCEN for gasless welding: torch on negative, ground clamp on positive. Wrong polarity causes weak arcs and porous welds.
