E91T1-B9 Flux Cored Welding Wire

E91T1-B9 is a 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb flux cored welding wire for welding P91, T91 and Grade 91 creep-resistant steels. Classified under AWS A5.29 / ASME SFA-5.29, it is designed for high-temperature power generation, steam piping, pressure equipment and refinery applications. E91T1-B9 is available in E91T1-B9C and E91T1-B9M shielding-gas classifications for gas-shielded FCAW.

P91 / Grade 91 Welding

E91T1-B9 is developed for modified 9Cr-1Mo creep-resistant steels with controlled additions of niobium, vanadium and nitrogen.
Typical base materials include:
  • ASTM A335 P91 pipe
  • ASTM A213 T91 tube
  • ASTM A387 Grade 91 plate
  • ASTM A182 F91 forgings
  • A369 FP91 piping
  • Similar Grade 91 fittings and castings
Typical applications include main steam piping, hot-reheat piping, boiler components, turbine castings, headers, valves, power plants and oil refineries.

What Makes E91T1-B9 Different?

The key feature of E91T1-B9 is its 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb weld-metal system.
  • 9% Cr: Supports oxidation and high-temperature service performance
  • Mo: Contributes to high-temperature strength
  • V + Nb + N: Important alloying additions for the creep-resistant Grade 91 system
  • FCAW process: Offers higher deposition productivity than manual covered-electrode welding
  • Rutile flux system: Supports stable arc behavior and slag removal in suitable commercial products
Manufacturer data specifically describes E91T1-B9 as a P91-type consumable with improved long-term creep resistance and high-temperature performance.

Classification
Shielding Gas
E91T1-B9C

E91T1-B9M
Ar/CO₂ mixed gas
Commercial B9M products commonly use approximately 75–80% Ar with CO₂ balance, while exact gas composition should follow the manufacturer's TDS and qualified WPS.

Mechanical Properties

AWS classification minimum requirements include:
Property
Minimum
Yield Strength
≥565 MPa
Tensile Strength
≥690 MPa
Elongation
≥16%
Typical commercial results may be higher after PWHT. For example, Hyundai reports approximately 625–632 MPa yield strength, 728–734 MPa tensile strength and 20–21% elongation after 760°C × 2 h PWHT.

Reference Welding Parameters

Commercial E91T1-B9 products use different parameter ranges depending on diameter, shielding gas and welding position.
Diameter
Reference Current
1.2 mm
120–300 A
1.4 mm
200–350 A
1.6 mm
200–400 A
For a specific 1.2 mm product, published manufacturer data may use a narrower operating window such as 140–170 A / 24–26 V. Therefore, final current and voltage should always follow the manufacturer's TDS and qualified WPS.

P91 Welding and PWHT

P91 / Grade 91 welding requires strict control of the welding procedure because the final properties depend on the alloy system and heat treatment.
Important variables include:
Preheat → Interpass Temperature → Heat Input → Hydrogen Control → PWHT
Published E91T1-B9 data commonly uses PWHT around 760°C, with the exact temperature, holding time and cooling requirements determined by the applicable code and qualified WPS.
