ER308H Stainless Steel Welding Wire

ER308H is a higher-carbon austenitic stainless steel filler metal used for specified welding applications involving 304H stainless steel. Its controlled carbon content of 0.04%–0.08% distinguishes it from low-carbon ER308L and makes it relevant to welding procedures designed for elevated-temperature service.

304L and compatible grades
ER308H is commonly considered when welding 304H and the applicable welding procedure calls for a higher-carbon filler metal. ER308L is not an automatic substitute because its lower carbon content can affect elevated-temperature weld-metal properties.
Choose the filler metal according to the base-metal specification, design code, service conditions, and qualified welding procedure (WPS).
For low-carbon stainless steel welding, see ER308L Stainless Steel Welding Wire.

Base Materials and High-Temperature Applications

ER308H is primarily associated with 304H austenitic stainless steel welding where elevated-temperature properties are important.
Potential application areas include:
  • High-temperature process piping and equipment
  • Petrochemical and chemical-processing installations
  • Pressure equipment designed for elevated-temperature service
  • Selected 321H or 347H applications when specified by a qualified welding procedure
For 321H and 347H components, filler-metal selection requires particular attention to component thickness, service temperature, and the risk of service-related heat-affected-zone cracking. These materials should not be treated as universally suitable for ER308H.

AWS Classification and Chemical Composition

ER308H is classified under AWS A5.9. The following are commonly referenced classification limits in weight percent. Confirm the applicable standard edition and actual product technical data sheet (TDS) before publication or use.
