ER308L
ER308L is copper-coated ultra-low carbon 21Cr-10Ni austenitic stainless steel solid wire, suitable for GMAW (MIG/MAG) and GTAW (TIG) welding.
Features
• Ultra-low carbon prevents chromium carbide precipitation with excellent intergranular corrosion resistance
• Controlled ferrite content offers good hot crack resistance
• Stable arc, low spatter, free-flowing molten pool and smooth weld appearance
• Excellent all-position welding, smooth wire feeding; suitable for food and chemical corrosion-resistant service
• Continuous service temperature: ≤300°C

Base Metal Matching
Suitable for 304 / 304L stainless steel; also applicable to 321 and 347 stainless steel.
Applications
Food equipment, medical instruments, chemical storage tanks, pipelines, pressure vessels, decorative stainless steel, water treatment equipment.
⚠️ Not for welding 316/316L base metal (molybdenum element not contained)
Welding Precautions
• Thoroughly remove oil, rust, scale and moisture from grooves before welding to avoid porosity. Use stainless steel-specific grinding wheels/wire brushes to prevent carbon steel contamination.
• Control interpass temperature below 150°C. Adopt narrow bead welding to reduce heat input.
• Wind protection is required for outdoor welding if wind speed exceeds 1.0 m/s to avoid weld oxidation.
• Not recommended for stainless steel to carbon steel dissimilar welding; ER309L is preferred for such applications.
ER308L vs ER308
✅ ER308L (C ≤0.03%): First choice for corrosion-resistant service, thick plates and components requiring post-weld heat treatment.
✅ ER308 (C ≤0.08%): Only for ordinary decorative thin plates without corrosion requirements.
Important Cautions
• Do not use pure CO₂ or gas mixtures with high CO₂ content. It will increase carbon content in weld metal and drastically reduce corrosion resistance.
• Cannot replace ER316L for service environments with chloride ion corrosion.
