ER309L
ER309L is copper-coated ultra-low carbon 23Cr-13Ni austenitic stainless steel solid wire, suitable for GMAW (MIG/MAG) and GTAW (TIG) welding.
Features
• Ultra-low carbon design prevents chromium carbide precipitation, delivering outstanding intergranular corrosion resistance
• Moderate ferrite content provides excellent hot crack resistance for dissimilar steel joints
• Stable arc, low spatter, good molten pool fluidity and smooth weld bead appearance
• Excellent all-position welding performance, smooth wire feeding; ideal for dissimilar metal & surfacing anti-corrosion service
• Continuous service temperature: ≤320°C

TIG (GTAW)
Shielding Gas: 99.99% High Purity Argon Gas Flow Rate: 8–15 L/min. Back purging is recommended for thick plates.
Base Metal Matching
Suitable for welding carbon steel & stainless steel dissimilar joints; also for 309, 309L stainless steel, stainless steel surfacing on carbon steel.
Applications
Dissimilar stainless-carbon steel transition layers, chemical furnace lining, high-temperature equipment, corrosion-resistant surfacing, boiler components, pressure vessel cladding.
⚠️ Not the first choice for pure 304/304L stainless steel welding (higher alloy cost)
Welding Precautions
• Thoroughly remove oil, rust, scale and moisture from grooves before welding to avoid porosity. Use stainless steel-specific grinding wheels/wire brushes to prevent carbon steel contamination.
• Control interpass temperature below 150°C. Adopt narrow bead welding to reduce heat input.
• Wind protection is required for outdoor welding if wind speed exceeds 1.0 m/s to avoid weld oxidation.
• Preferred filler for stainless steel to carbon steel dissimilar welding.
ER309L vs ER308L
✅ ER309L (23Cr-13Ni): First choice for carbon steel-stainless steel dissimilar welding, surfacing cladding, high-temperature anti-corrosion parts
✅ ER308L (21Cr-10Ni): Only for welding same-series 304/304L/321/347 austenitic stainless steel
Important Cautions
• Do not use pure CO₂ or gas mixtures with high CO₂ content. It will increase carbon content in weld metal and drastically reduce corrosion resistance.
• Not suitable for chloride-rich marine corrosion environments without molybdenum element.
