Low Alloy & High Strength

E12018-G 120 ksi High Strength Low Alloy Welding Electrode

E12018-G is a 120 ksi high-strength low-hydrogen welding electrode for SMAW. It is designed for demanding high-strength and low-alloy steels where higher weld-metal strength is required. As a G-type AWS classification, E12018-G does not define one universal weld-metal chemistry. Actual composition, toughness and performance should be confirmed from the product TDS and MTC.

E12018-G for S690 and Q&T Steel

A 120 ksi electrode may be considered when weld-metal strength needs to closely match ultra-high-strength base materials.
Depending on the qualified product, applications may include:
  • S690, S690Q and S690QL-class steels
  • Q&T and fine-grained high-strength steels
  • Heavy machinery and lifting equipment
  • Cranes and high-strength structures
  • Penstocks and hydraulic equipment
  • Heavy industrial fabrication
The exact base-metal compatibility should be confirmed from the manufacturer's TDS and qualified WPS.

AWS Mechanical Requirements

AWS A5.5/A5.5M E12018-G is classified at the 120 ksi tensile-strength level.
Property
AWS Minimum
Tensile Strength
≥830 MPa (120 ksi)
Yield Strength
≥740 MPa (107 ksi)
Elongation
≥14%
These are AWS classification minimums, not typical commercial values. Specific products may provide higher strength or additional Charpy impact performance. Project-specific toughness requirements should be confirmed from the product certification.

E12018-G Chemistry

The G designation does not specify one complete universal weld-metal chemistry. Commercial E12018-G electrodes may use combinations of Mn, Ni, Cr and Mo to achieve the required strength, toughness and weldability.
When approving or replacing an E12018-G electrode, compare:
  • Weld-metal chemistry
  • Tensile and yield strength
  • Charpy impact results
  • Hydrogen designation
  • Base-metal compatibility
  • WPS requirements
  • MTC and certification

Welding and Low-Hydrogen Control

E12018-G is generally supplied as a basic low-hydrogen covered electrode for SMAW. Common commercial diameters include 2.5, 3.2, 4.0 and 5.0 mm.
Welding current, polarity, preheat and interpass temperature vary by product, diameter and welding position. The manufacturer's TDS and qualified WPS should therefore be used as the primary reference.
Low-hydrogen electrodes should be stored and redried according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Low Alloy & High Strength

E9018-G High Strength Low Alloy Welding Electrode

E9018-G is a 90 ksi high-strength low-alloy steel welding electrode classified under AWS A5.5/A5.5M. It is a basic, low-hydrogen SMAW electrode for high-strength steel and demanding low-alloy welding applications. Unlike fixed-alloy classifications such as E9018-B2, E9018-B3 and E9018-B91, the E9018-G classification allows an agreed weld-metal chemistry. The manufacturer's TDS and MTC are therefore important when selecting the electrode for a specific steel grade or application.
